“My self-awareness has improved and I am more conscious of my disease (alcoholism). I feel like a different person! Thank you!”
-Julianne* , Canvas Health Client
School-Based Mental Health Clinical Trainee; Lake Harriet Upper/Lower Elementary
My professional philosophy is both a science and an art: I view my professionalism as both a science in building mutually shared experiences with my students, as well as an art in building meaning between a student’s experience with mental health, education and growth & development.
My professional experience entails working with – in prior roles – survivors of domestic and sexual violence. I began my volunteering career working with fellow college and university students – as a student – in building advocacy groups, networks and activities to end violence on college campuses. I transitioned into a role of Instructional Social Worker for Osceola County School District in central Florida. There, I developed a passion for early intervention and prevention measures to help students build their social-emotional skills and awareness of boundaries, consent and general awareness of well-being & safety. I also provided crisis interventions for students & families in need during a difficult transition time related to COVID-19 pandemic.
I transitioned into a different role with Minnesota Independence College & Community (MICC) in Richfield, MN in 2021. There, I provided instruction to college students on social emotional learning and sexual health education. Shortly after, I took up a role with Sexual Violence Center in Minneapolis, MN, and provided prevention workshops and counseling to survivors seeking services.
I am now a School Based Therapist with TAP (Therapeutic Assistance Program) and provide therapeutic assistance to students in need – which include addressing topics of gender, anxiety, depression and many more.

My training and clinical experience has been focused on providing psychological testing and therapy to individuals with a broad experience of mental health and neurodevelopmental presentations. I use emotion-focused, trauma-informed, CBT, DBT skills, and family systems approaches to meet client needs and build upon their current strengths. I am trained in TFCBT, an evidence-based intervention for treating trauma in children and teens. My current areas of interest include self-esteem and body image, relationship issues, and working with survivors of domestic violence.
Prior to beginning my work at Canvas Health, I worked for Family Service Rochester, a community-based mental health agency, helping seniors and people with disabilities maintain their independence and improve daily life skills. I also completed my master’s level practicum at Family Service Rochester. As a clinical trainee at FSR, I worked with children, teens, adults, and couples doing outpatient therapy. I also co-facilitated adherent adult DBT skills group. I have been at Canvas Health for over a year and have enjoyed doing outpatient therapy with teens, adults, families, and couples.

Psychotherapist Clinical Trainee
I believe that every person has a story that needs to be heard. My passion for this work was ignited by my own personal experience bolstering my mental health, and since then, I’ve dedicated my life to helping others navigate the complexities of their emotions.
In our sessions, I strive to create a sanctuary—a space where you can explore your thoughts, dreams, and challenges without fear of judgment. I firmly believe that within you lies the wisdom and strength to move through the obstacles you are facing. I have a particular passion for working with creative individuals including musicians, visual artists, and writers.
I have worked in the mental health field for over 5 years. For the majority of this time, I have worked in co-occurring disorders spaces. I am currently a licensed alcohol and drug counselor (LADC) and under supervision while I pursue my licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) licensure.
I draw upon a rich tapestry of therapeutic techniques, including Adlerian Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Strengths-based Therapy, creative interventions, and Mindfulness to create a uniquely tailored experience for each person I work with. I also strongly believe in teaching my clients how the brain, the body, and relational influences impact how we experience our daily living.
Outside of therapy, you might find me foraging for edible plants and fungi in the woods, cooking a new recipe, writing music, or playing with my cat, Fitz.

In-Home Family Treatment Supervisor
I believe that mental and emotional health problems experienced by children and adolescents arise from a combination of biological and environmental causes and these causes can be historical or existing in the client’s current lives. I believe one of the ways to be helpful to these clients is by having their family systems that surround them function as well as possible, both for the client and all family members.
I began providing in-home family therapy 28 year ago, have been providing these services with Canvas Health in Washington County for the past 17 years, and have been supervisor of the In-Home Services/Family Treatment program at Canvas health since May 2018.
This program is available for Washington County residents. To make a referral, complete this form.
Clinical Psychology Doctoral Intern
My goal is to seek out those who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or incapable of living up to their true potential. I believes that change comes from within, and to be able to change, we must feel secure, grounded, supported, and clearly understand what is keeping us from that change. My approach to therapy is based on building a strong, trusting relationship with my clients. The most significant predictor in a good outcome for therapy is when you can trust the therapeutic relationship and feel safe to share and explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. Rather than focusing solely on reducing symptoms, I aim for clients to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and create healthier connections with others. Understanding how we view and express emotions, connect with our own body and mind, and deal with the uncertainty of life, will all be important aspects of our work together. By fostering a sense of safety and self-confidence in the work, it will be easier to extend these feelings into your everyday life and relationships. Openness, Humor, and Commitment are important values in my therapeutic work.
I am in my final year of Augsburg University’s Doctorate in Clinical Psychology program, completing my final internship at Canvas Health. I have experience conducting psychological testing and providing therapy to adults and teens with various physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. I have worked in the mental health field for nearly 10 years at inpatient mental health units, group homes, private practices, community mental health centers, outpatient residential-treatment centers, and as a personal care attendant. These experiences have fueled my ability to instill resilience in the face of adversity, advocate for client’s needs, and commit to delivering individualistic care sensitive to the whatever the client’s specific needs and desires are for growth.
I spend my free time watching movies and sports (Skol Vikings!) and spending time with my wife and son. I love to travel and can be a competitive board game player.

Psychotherapist
Adlerian Psychology:
My foundational approach is using Adlerian Psychotherapy which focuses on applied use of encouragement, ensuring a sense of connectedness and challenging of mistaken beliefs/assumptions/attitudes/behaviors about self and association with their world view.
I started this next level career as a co-occurring substance use addiction counselor with a mental health focus in 2017. I transitioned to fully practice mental health therapy in 2021 working with adults who experience multiple concerns with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, addiction to behavioral disorders and trauma using a person-centered approach. I apply an eclectic array of modalities such as Adlerian, CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic, ACT, Narrative Therapy as well as culturally responsive approaches that incorporate motivational interviewing techniques. I have a strong Christian faith, and I enjoy working with those of the same faith, and those of different faiths, and those who do not practice a religion or faith. Talk therapy is the traditional form of therapy most people think of when they talk about seeing a therapist. I work to help you find and address the root causes of your suffering, rather than to label and treat the symptoms alone; after all you’re more than just a label. In a relaxed atmosphere, I will work with you to address the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical imbalances that are causing you stress and discomfort. I believe that one’s emotional balance is important to every aspect of life and when it is off balance, getting the support to achieve balance is important. My goal as a therapist is having a listening ear, providing unconditional positive regard and most importantly empathy creates a unique and welcoming environment for those seeking these types of services.
I enjoy watching competitive television cooking programs, traveling, avid foodie, and watching all movie genres.

Life Skills Counselor, Elementary Mental Health Classroom (EMHC)
Existentialism.
Within the field of human services, I started working as a Direct Support Professional in a group home with adolescent boys with behavioral and developmental disorders, eventually becoming a Program Supervisor for the same company. I found Karner Blue Education Center and was referenced there by a family member. After applying, I was recruited to join the EMHC program as an Education Assistant Specialist. I worked as an EAS for 3 years with Karner Blue, for I loved the EMHC program. This inspired me to pursue my LPCC licensure and apply to Canvas Health to continue working within the EMHC program. Early mental health interventions empower children and adolescents to build healthy adult lives. I work collaboratively and compassionately with families to help children develop close emotional relationships, improve their sense of safety and control, regulate their behaviors and emotions, and develop a positive sense of self.
EMDR, CBT, polyvagal exercises, hypnotherapy, MATCH-ADTC, and play therapy are a few of the evidence-based interventions I use. Some of my clients present with traumatic stress disorders, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorders, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders, Tourette’s Syndrome, anxiety, depression, social skill deficits, and special education needs. Others just need a safe place to talk. As a therapist and educator, I have over 15 years of experience advocating for children and adolescents in school-based settings.
I have two boys, 13 and 22, and love to cheer them on at sports games. I also love to swim and write.

Crisis Practitioner
Substance Use Disorder Program Manager
No matter where you are on your path to recovery, we welcome you! Collaboration and support are important keys to successful recovery. I want you to know that our counselors will meet you where you are and provide education and guidance for the next leg of your journey. It is important to have options, personal power, and the support and encouragement necessary to make those very difficult decisions along the way. Our commitment, our investment is in your success.
I began my career in substance use in 1998. Over the years, I have worked with adults and adolescents in community, residential, outpatient and correctional settings. From the start, I have firmly believed that the greatest opportunity for recovery happens when treating the entire person, not the addiction. I am your tour guide, offering counsel and encouragement as you ride that wave out of the dark, shark-infested waters of addiction onto the sandy shore, where recovery lives.
Addiction is a thief who robs the individual of their personal power, their dignity, their relationships and their agency. Through compassionate, client-centered counseling coupled with practical application of skills, I have been privileged to bear witness to many successful journeys. With skills such as thought management techniques, cognitive behavioral strategies, methods to cope with stress, mental health symptoms and the overcoming of trauma there is hope for recovery.
Regardless of my role (Technician, Driver, Counselor, Manager, Director), I have always been passionate about recovery. I am honored to have spent my career helping others to achieve their goals for improved quality of life and lasting recovery.
In my current role at Canvas Health, I am afforded the unique opportunity to mentor other professionals, and, in that way, I have been able to continue to provide an excellent quality of care to the clients we serve.
Emergency Social Services Lead
I was a deputy sheriff and am now a county social worker.
Outpatient Clinical Therapist Trainee
I believe that suffering is a part of life, but also that suffering is a great teacher and nurturer if we allow it. No one can live your life, but you–and still there is a place for you here in the sea of humanity.
Therapy invites you to see yourself in a new, more glorious, often fractured light. It takes the stuck, broken pieces that weigh us down and examines them with fresh eyes, offering hope in the healing journey ahead as those pieces turn into our own solid foundation. Be gentle as you begin this next journey.
I have worked in private practice in an outpatient setting since January of 2023. I have been a mindfulness teacher since 2021 with a prior career history in the arts and HR.

When working with younger clients I include family in the therapeutic process and find that it enhances relationships and fosters a collaborative environment where everyone can thrive. My foundational approach focuses on connecting individuals to their community and purpose and by helping them discover values that resonate with their cultural needs and life experience. By working alongside with clients, a path towards growth that honors individuality and promotes meaningful connection is developed.

Psychotherapist
Life is sometimes hard. It is okay to struggle and to need help. I approach therapeutic work as a collaborative effort towards mental wellness. I believe that a lot of mental health symptoms stem from attempts to meet needs in ways that work at the time and later lose much of their effectiveness. Together we can work to change these patterns and find a way for you to thrive in the life you deserve.
I have worked with clients ages 5 to 90, of any gender identity, and with a variety of presenting problems. My previous work has focused on students, residential psychiatric care, substance use and abuse, problem sexual behavior, clients in crisis, and outpatient care with adolescents and adults.
Your values are the center of all our work together. Each person comes to therapy as an expert on themselves, their experiences, and their goals for growth. I work to honor that unique perspective by spending time getting to know you. Your history, passions, hobbies, interests, beliefs, values, traits, goals, and everything else that makes you who you are come together in a spectacularly distinct style of life. Together, we can use these strengths in the following ways: to review patterns that are not helping you live the life you desire; to challenge symptoms, systems, and situations that are leading to discouragement in your daily life; and to build a toolbox of skills and insights to help you challenge the areas in which you seek change.
I emphasize genuineness in all of my work. I bring whole self to session each day and encourage that you do the same. I love to learn about the important people in your life, your specific hobbies and interests, and anything else that makes you the youest you. I’m involved in several niche interests myself and love finding ways to tie your passions into our work towards wellness. I bring a lot of humor into my work and am comfortable with feedback and openness.
I utilize primarily Adlerian Psychotherapy and techniques from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I am an LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapist. I do individual and group therapy and work with adolescents, adults, families, and couples.

Psychotherapist/ Clinic Supervisor
Welcome! My approach to therapy begins with you – your goals, hopes, and dreams for the future. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone has everything they need inside of them. I believe people get stuck when they get disconnected from their internal wisdom. I believe people get stuck in strategies to try and solve their struggles, but those strategies don’t get them what they need or they pay a high price for them. Here you are, taking a bold step towards getting what you need, getting unstuck.
Collaboration is extremely important to me – we are partners working towards your goals, those things you want to be different. I see myself as a guide, walking with you. I bring a variety of tools as a guide. Tools to help shift the mind and patterns of thinking. Tools to help the body shift and release unpleasant experiences, allowing things to pass. Tools to help the whole person to release past traumas and adverse life experiences, that keep them stuck in unhelpful adaptations. My focus is to adapt and customize all of these possible tools for each unique client, building upon all their innate strengths.
While I’m focused on working hard with clients, there’s always room for humor and lightness. I bring my whole self and I invite clients to bring their whole selves into the work, not just the “injured parts”. I love a great joke or an interesting story. I’m endlessly curious about so many things about the world and people. I love movies and eating well. I love traveling near and far – learning about the world, history, and people.
For those looking for a more straightforward description, in my practice I use: Client Centered Humanism, EMDR, CBT, Attachment Focused Trauma Therapy (AFTT-A), Emotional Freedom Technique, Mindfulness, and Somatic Experiencing.

Doctoral Intern
I stress the importance of practices of self-compassion in addressing shame and self-criticism. Additionally, I see the promotion of insight as an important step in demystifying, de-shaming, and empowering clients. This often involves orienting clients to the connection between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors related to their presenting problem. I find that this psychoeducation and insight promotion can create some much-needed separation between client and presenting concern. From here, there is room for attention to be brought to their values, broad life goals, cultural identity, and vital strengths so as not to lose sight of their personhood through their struggles. Despite many of my interventions being focused on adaptive change, I also see the value in acceptance, distress tolerance, and mindful awareness. In this way, I see the role of a therapist as often not fixing client problems but rather helping clients change how they relate to them.
I have more than seven years of experience working in the mental health field. I am currently a student in the University of St. Thomas’ counseling psychology doctoral program (PsyD). My professional experience includes working with adolescents and adults providing individual therapy in outpatient and college counseling center settings. School-Based Mental Health Clinical Trainee; STMA Middle School West
Working with youth has always been close to my heart, and I believe wholeheartedly, that by building healthy children, it helps support a lifetime of health. Our world is so very complex, and in navigating all that life has to offer, we can all use extra support, an ear to listen, ideas to work through difficulties, reminders of how we have gotten through the hard times, and how every day, we can work hard to do our best, acknowledge and apologize for our missteps, and work to make healthier choices the next time.
I have been a Social Worker since 2008 and have worked in several different areas since starting in the school-based program with Canvas Health.
I worked in child protection for about 4.5 years and had some brief experience working with adult foster care licensing as well. I loved working with families and helping them by removing or reducing barriers and reunify children with their caregivers.
I then transitioned to working as a Care Coordination Social Worker for about four years, helping steer individuals to resources, working on client-identified goals, and working with healthcare providers to help support client health. However, I truly missed working with youth, and ended up moving into working with middle schoolers for seven years as a school social worker in rural Minnesota. I worked to promote embedding social and emotional learning in the district to help empower and educate staff on ideas to support students, coordinated with community providers, addressed students crisis as well as attempting to prevent crises, and collaborated with staff, caregivers and community providers to help support students overall.
